ellaOne is a contraceptive that is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or if your contraceptive method fails.

How ellaOne works:

ellaOne contains the substance ulipristal acetate, which works by altering the activity of the natural hormone progesterone, which is needed for ovulation to occur. This medicine works by delaying ovulation. Emergency contraception is not effective in all cases. Out of 100 women taking this medicine, about 2 will become pregnant. This medicine is a contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, it will not stop the current pregnancy.

Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases

Only condoms can protect you from sexually transmitted infections. This medicine will not protect you from HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, and syphilis) .

Dosage and method of administration:

Take one tablet by mouth as soon as possible and no later than 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex or after your contraceptive method has failed. Do not wait to take the tablet. – You can take the tablet at any time during your menstrual cycle. – You can take the tablet at any time of the day, either before, during, or after a meal. – If you are using any of the medicines that can prevent ellaOne from working effectively (see section 2 “What you need to know before you take ellaOne”) or if you have used any of these medicines within the last 4 weeks, the effectiveness of ellaOne may be reduced for you.
